A dental emergency can happen at any time for any reason. If you are experiencing a dental emergency, call our dental office as soon as possible. We will be able to fit you into our schedule and help restore your smile.
Some of the most common dental emergencies include the following:
Teeth that fracture or crack could be the result of a trauma, such as biting on hard candy or falling and hitting your mouth, or might be caused by an underlying dental condition, such as teeth grinding.
Teeth that have a fracture or crack may be sensitive when exposed to hot or cold foods and beverages and may be more sensitive to pressure. You may also notice increased tooth pain when biting down or when eating certain foods.
If you suspect that you’ve fractured or cracked a tooth, visit the dentist as soon as possible. The sooner the tooth is treated, the better the outcome will be.
An abscess is a pus-filled sac that typically forms in the tooth’s root tip. They are almost always the result of advanced decay. In some cases, the abscess can rupture and leak into the surrounding tissues. This can cause swelling, pain, and fever. Abscesses should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible.
When you break a tooth, you should rinse the mouth with warm water. If the tooth is knocked out, you should rinse it gently with water, but do not scrub it or remove any tissue. If possible, try to put the tooth back in place. After washing your hands, rinse the mouth with water. Use a cold compress on the cheek to minimize swelling. Apply a moistened piece of gauze or tea bag to the damaged tooth and bite down gently. If bleeding continues, place another moistened piece of gauze or tea bag and bite down again.
If the tooth is broken, try to clean it with water. If you cannot clean the tooth, place it in a small container of milk. A broken tooth often requires emergency dental treatment.
A toothache is a sign that something is wrong with your teeth or gums. It’s often caused by a cavity, infection, or a damaged tooth.
When you have a toothache, rinse your mouth to clear away any food debris. Then, use floss to remove any trapped particles between your teeth. If your toothache persists, make an appointment to see your dentist. They can help determine the cause and help you find relief.
A cracked tooth can progress to a worse state if you do not seek treatment. A crack can lead to an abscessed tooth. An abscessed tooth is an infection that spreads from the tooth to the gums and can even spread to your jawbone. This can cause pain, swelling, and redness.
